Guardian Weekend redesign

January 27th, 2009

I mentioned yesterday that the Guardian’s Weekend magazine is getting a new design from next Saturday. Weekend’s art director Maggie Murphy kindly asked me to do the cover this morning, so here’s a preview

    The Guardian, The Times, etc.

I would like to learn your view on Le Monde redesign, just one day old. It seems to be a mingle of The Guardian and IHT, at least in my eyes.

What font is it? Seems to be Publico but is bit narrower.

@s: good spot. It’s a new black condensed, via Público, out of Haçienda, the original serif which Paul Barnes & Christian Schwartz devloped for the Guardian, and which later became Guardian Egyptian. Will post more details soon

Was the tidy-up because of the Greek copy? http://www.markporter.com/notebook/?p=166

    Open letter to Mr. Porter.

In hindsight I bet your thinking, why did I attack the design of the new Saturday Times so harshly? Why did I slag off of The Times in my usual pompous attitude?

Was it the best move? Would it not have been a good idea to hold back a bit considering I was releasing a supposedly brilliantly designed new magazine a week later? Which for the purposes of this letter lets substitute the word “brilliantly’ with ‘arrogantly’.

The your ‘new’ supplement seems an excuse to show off you ‘new’ font. The layout was pretty poor; the large headlines didn’t interact with the content. And the font looks too tight and stretched. Times Extra Bold seems a far more structured font.

From your sneak peak it seemed as if it had potential. Circa 1950-60. But no. Lack of tension on the pages didn’t help this retarded sister font of Guardian Egyptian or should we call it the bastard child. Frankly I don’t really care what came first. Or where it came from or who’s child it. Or are you going to lay this one on Maggie Murphy?

Considering you did the cover it may have been your inside joke about Simon Cowell. But placing the names on a crotch… bad move.

So what would your view be on Le Monde? I guess if it doesn’t look like Publico or The Guardian you probably wont like it. Look around you Mr. Porter I guess you’re slowly realizing you need to raise your game.

I really like it, although I agree with Niel on one point: reading the words “Jamie Oliver” off Simon Cowell’s crotch makes me feel a little unwell …

Niel – “I bet your thinking”?

I bet you’re thinking you should have used you’re not your.
